1.
If life were like the movies You and I would be hand-in-hand Marveling at the Christmas lights Along a snowy path We’d watch the frost climb on the windows Hear the carols, cross the signals Put the needle to the wax And watch the fire fall to ash The timing would be perfect As Hollywood would have it They’d broadcast our romance In black and white You’d drop a sweet, but scripted line That I’d fall for every time Then the scene would fade to black I’d blink my eyes, remember that I’m still here, still alone The only light in the room is from the flickering glow Of the classics on the TV screen I’ll sleep the holiday away And rewrite it in my dreams If I could make life like the movies If it were up to me I’d spill my guts and say I miss you That I love you, finally I’d take the first flight headed north Show up breathless at your door We’d kiss minutes before midnight On twelve/twenty-four But no, I’m still here, still alone The only light in the room is from the flickering glow Of the classics on the TV screen I’ll sleep the holiday away And rewrite it in my dreams Oh, if only you knew If only you were here I might have crossed the first line off My Christmas list this year But no, I’m still here, still alone
